Internet/ World Wide Web

Although many people use the words “internet” and “web” interchangeably, they are actually two different things – two different things that work side by side. The internet is the “global network” of computers and electronic devices. While, the World Wide Web (WWW) is all the website you can access through the internet. Therefore, the WWW is a part of the internet.

The internet is not credited to one single inventor, instead many have contributed to it and it has evolved drastically over the years. The internet was first used in the United States as a government weapon during the Cold War. During the war, scientist and the military were concerned about a Soviet attack on the nations telephone systems, and so in 1962 J.C.R Lickliter a scientist from MIT and ARPA, proposed a network of computers as a solution. Then in 1965, the development of the ARPAnet allowed information to be sent from one computer to another through “packet switching.”

As the network grew, packet switching was making it difficult to create a “single worldwide internet.” Then in the 1970s, Vinton Cerf invented the Transition Control Protocol (TCP), allowing all computers on the world’s networks to communicate. It was used by researchers and scientist to send files and data from one computer to another. According to CERN, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989. He created the WWW we know today and transformed what Cerf has done into a “web” of information that anyone on the internet could retrieve.

Berners-Lee is also attributed with creating the first website on August 6, 1991. The site was about the WWW project and described how the Web is used and what it is. Thanks to CERN, in 2013 they restored the first ever website: info.cern.ch/.
